This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of one of the UK’s largest Biomass CHP Plants. RWE npower is the generation arm of a leading integrated energy company. Our mixed fuel portfolio of power stations currently supplies 10,000 MW nationwide, and we are growing. You will play a major role in the mobilisation, commissioning and ultimate success of this state-of-the-art Biomass Plant.

An exciting career opportunity exists to join the inaugural team responsible for the mobilisation and commercial operation of Markinch CHP. Reporting to the Production Manager, the Chemist is responsible for operational chemistry, environmental compliance and occupational hygiene (including COSHH and noise monitoring) to ensure overall business performance is optimised and regulatory compliance is achieved at all times.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop knowledge and experience of operations, safety and environmental compliance, dependant upon the applicants needs.

The key accountabilities for this role are as follows:

• Leading on a wide range of mobilisation activities

• Supporting the selection, recruitment and development of the plant team

• Develop and implement effective processes and strategies for the plant to deliver CHP and portfolio targets

• Monitoring and control of the plant operational chemistry, using both lab-based and online instrumentation

• Provide on site fuel moisture measurements and management and QA of fuel analysis by external laboratories

• Ensure compliance with company policy and legislation in areas of chemistry and environment

• Give advice and be able to lead issues in specific areas of Health and Safety legislation including COSHH, noise monitoring and management and operation of Legionella control programme

• Development of chemistry and environment training programmes for all staff

• Site environmental activities to ensure compliance with Environmental Authorisations and maintain the site commitment to an ISO14001 Environmental Management System

• Undertake investigations and report on incidents and complaints

• Provide effective liaison with the Regulators and other external parties

• Implement financial plans, authorise and control expenditure and report performance

• Represent the plant and participate in Chemistry, Environment and Health and Safety

The ideal candidate MUST have the following skills/experience:

• A degree or equivalent in chemistry or a related subject.

• A high level of knowledge of power plant chemistry

• Knowledge of the requirements of the COSHH Regs

• Knowledge of modern chemical analytical techniques, in particular water and fuel analysis

• A knowledge of Environmental Regulation and Monitoring, Noise at Work Regulations, Waste Disposal Regulations and ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems

• Have good negotiating skills and understand the needs of the stakeholders.

• Display leadership, teamwork and people management skills.

• Familiarity in IT applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

• Ensure that guidance received from the chemistry expertise in Swindon is followed or challenged as appropriate.

The following skills and experience are desirable:

• Membership, or progression towards membership of a professional institution is preferred

• A knowledge of Environmental Regulation and Monitoring, Noise at Work Regulations, Waste Disposal Regulations and ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems

• Experience of budgetary control.

The individual will have good written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and a logical approach to problem solving. The Site Chemist will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and flexible individual willing to take on considerable responsibility as a member of the site team. They should understand the needs of the business and develop individuals to meet the business requirements.

RWE npower O&M Services includes Cogen which is the cogeneration division of RWE npower and is one of the leading industrial CHP (Combined Heat and Power) operators in the UK as well as providing O&M services for the RWE OCGT fleet, Utilities in Ireland and for Biomass operations in Scotland.

The Operations and Maintenance Services Group is responsible for ensuring that plant is operated safely, reliably and efficiently in conjunction with the environmental license and good practice to deliver the requirements of the host site and Company.
