Job Description

Employed by RWE Npower plc, the Site Electrical Maintenance Technician will be responsible for carrying out the day to day operational maintenance duties on the Biomass CHP Plant. Reporting to the Production Manager you will be responsible for carrying out plant maintenance and routines which will include fault diagnosis and breakdown recovery under the direction of the Site Lead Engineer.

This post offers the opportunity to work in a site team environment and experience a wide range of maintenance responsibilities associated with the operation of a modern technology CHP power plant environment.

As part of this team you will contribute to a safe & reliable, flexible CHP plant operation in line with host site requirements and site procedures, as well as maintaining compliance with statutory health, safety and environmental provisions through plant maintenance activities.

Key accountabilities for this role will include:

• Planning, organising, executing and where necessary supervising Electrical maintenance activities on the CHP power plant.

• Carrying out core skill first line maintenance and fault diagnosis and assisting with maintenance activities across differing trades.

• Carrying out operational maintenance routines from the site Maintenance Management System

• Updating and maintaining the site PRISM system (Maintenance Management System - Training will be provided as necessary)

• Maintaining and developing plant electrical testing, assist with instrument calibrations and critical device testing including the recording of such activities

• Investigating & rectification of operational problems with plant electrical systems and equipment

• Assist with investigating plant trips including first line fault finding.

• Developing and maintaining maintenance documentation, records and procedures.

• Managing maintenance contracts and contractors.

• Ensure that the stores inventory system is updated

• Procure in accordance with company policy the necessary consumables and electrical equipment required for your duties

• Application of safe systems of work, such as Putting People to Work, Work Control Documents, and npower Renewables Safety Rules, which may include taking on the duties of Safety Controller authorised to carry out HV electrical switching and earthing as required by the Production Manager.

• Management of outage work packages.

• Providing operational support assisting in plant start-ups and shutdowns as required.

• Provide maintenance support and first line fault diagnosis on the HV/MV/LV electrical systems.

The ideal candidate MUST have the following skills/experience:

• Competent in a wide range of Electrical applications including the maintenance of process control systems

• Qualified maintenance background and experience.

• Carrying out duties under the npower Renewables Safety Rules as nominated by the Production Manager

• Able to install and commission additional and replacement electrical equipment and assist with instrumentation work to the required standards.

• Knowledge and experience of power / process plant operation and maintenance.

• Able to respond to plant problems out of hours

• Display good teamwork and interpersonal skills, working flexibly within a small team

• IT literate, displaying skills in numeracy and literacy

• An appreciation of key process safety issues such as Plant Modification Procedure, Safe Operating Limits, Pressure Systems and reporting mechanisms

• Ensure that all necessary plant information is provided to the Site Engineers in order for an effective communication process to take place with engineering expertise in Swindon with respect to key plant issues, most notably process safety

• Ensure that key information regarding plant defects and temporary repair mechanisms are provided to the Site Engineers in order for an effective communication process to take place with respect to key plant issues, most notably process safety

The following skills/experience are desirable:

• Hold a recognised engineering qualification in your craft discipline

• Experience of instrumentation and control systems and maintenance thereof

• Be Compex trained and have working knowledge of maintaining Ex rated equipment

• Hold a 17th Edition qualification – BS7671:2008 IEE Wiring Regulations Qualification

• Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legal requirements

• Ability to learn and take on board new skill sets and work flexibly

• Power station operations and knowledge of maintenance of power plant / codes of practice, technical procedures etc.

The individual should be able to think logically and respond quickly and confidently to problems with a minimum of supervision within company procedures. The Site Electrical Maintenance Technician will be a self-motivated, flexible individual, able to work alone, use initiative and be willing to accept responsibility to deliver npower O&M Services requirements.

RWE npower O&M Services includes Cogen which is the cogeneration division of RWE npower and is one of the leading industrial CHP (Combined Heat and Power) operators in the UK as well as providing O&M services for the RWE OCGT fleet, Utilities in Ireland and for Biomass operations in Scotland.

The Operations and Maintenance Services Group is responsible for ensuring that plant is operated safely, reliably and efficiently in conjunction with the environmental license and good practice to deliver the requirements of the host site and Company.

Salary: £22,000 – £29,000 + bonus
