Job Description
Glenrothes, Fife
Reporting directly to the Production Manager, the post holder will work as a member of a small shift team (at times alone), and will be responsible for flexibly operating the CHP Facility in line with Owner’s requirements and site procedures, as well as maintaining compliance with statutory health, safety and environmental provisions. The Operations Technician will be involved with, and assist in improving, the site systems and will take responsibility for nominated plant areas as well as contributing to areas of site maintenance, as directed.
This role will include a mixture of the following key accountabilities:
• Operating the CHP Facility whilst ensuring compliance with appropriate safety, environmental and statutory standards / requirements.
• Carrying out plant-related routine duties and checks to ensure the CHP Facility’s commercial performance, availability and reliability is maintained to a high level.
• Application of safe systems of work, such as Putting People to Work, Authorisation to Work, and npower Renewables Safety Rules, which will include taking on the duties of Safety Controller and may require you to take on the duties of Safety Co-ordinator, as required by the Production Manager.
• Plant and control system first line fault diagnosis and reporting.
• Production and Application of operational, maintenance and safety systems documentation for the CHP Facility incorporating relevant RWE standards. This will include periodic revue and updating of the said systems from time to time.
• Planning, organising and supervising maintenance activities as determined by the Production Manager.
• Assisting Site Engineers on projects and outage preparation
• General maintenance of plant as determined by individual competence
• Liaising with internal and external customers
• Release of plant for work to be carried out
• Maintain professional attitude, an appropriate level of communication and courteous behaviour to all RWE colleagues, contractors, and visitors to the CHP site
• Taking advantage of commercial opportunities as directed by the Production Manager and Npower Renewables Plant Manager, through plant operation
• Occasional opportunities to support other sites in the Cogen portfolio subject to agreement with the Production Manager.
The ideal post holder must have the skills/experience below:
• Competent in all aspects of CHP plant operation
• Appreciation of the commercial aspects of the power generation business
• Carrying out the duties of Safety Controller / Safety Co-ordinator under NRL’s Safety Rules as nominated and authorised
• Knowledge and experience of power / process plant operation & / or maintenance.
• Display good teamwork and interpersonal skills, working flexibly within a small team
• IT literate, displaying skills in numeracy and literacy
• Nominate gas consumption and electrical output through the designated site systems on a shift basis and in accordance with RWE procedures
• Assist & respond effectively to operational demands and assist in achieving safe and efficient generation, giving due regard to all site authorisations and within prescribed limits to ensure the process is operated safely at all times.
• Identify operation outside prescribed limits and ensure corrective action is taken. Where such operation impacts on Process Safety, to immediately alert the Production Manager and ensure that the event is fully recorded on Madison or equivalent incident reporting systems.
• Identify and immediately report any plant defects, observations and other anomalies that have, or have the potential to, affect the safety of the process or which are noted to be abnormal to usual operations
• Carry out plant routines and testing to operating instructions ensuring that the testing is recorded and documented in the site systems
The criteria below are desirable:
• Operations / Engineering qualification, or study towards an engineering or operations qualification
• Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legal requirements
• Power station operations and maintenance of power plant / codes of practice, technical procedures etc.
The individual should be able to think logically and respond quickly and confidently to problems with a minimum of supervision. The Site Operations Technician will be a self-motivated, flexible individual, able to work alone, use initiative and be willing to accept responsibility to deliver RWE requirements.
RWE npower O&M Services includes Cogen which is the cogeneration division of RWE npower and is one of the leading industrial CHP (Combined Heat and Power) operators in the UK as well as providing O&M services for the RWE OCGT fleet, Utilities in Ireland and for Biomass operations in Scotland.
The Operations and Maintenance Services Group is responsible for ensuring that plant is operated safely, reliably and efficiently in conjunction with the environmental license and good practice to deliver the requirements of the host site and Company.
Salary : Upto £29,000 plus shift allowance and bonus
