5 reasons why you should choose a career in the energy industry

04/01 2018Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog

The energy sector is currently in a state of major change, with new technologies and consumer patterns and demands all helping to shape an increasingly complex energy landscape. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the industry, and at npower we’re always looking to the future and how we can improve not only our business, but also our customer offering.

If you’re considering a career in the retail energy sector – or perhaps have never thought about it but want to find out more – here are just five of the many reasons why it’s a great place to work.

You can work in many different areas

A role in the retail energy industry can take on many different shapes and forms. At npower, we have a wide range of operational areas that support our diverse business. This includes roles in customer services, energy sales, technical areas, digital and professional and business support functions. This means we need people working in everything from SEO management and digital PR through to Smart meter installation and quantitative modelling.

As well the variety of different job areas and levels available at npower, we also offer competitions, internships and graduate schemes to help students gain direct entry into the energy industry – and npower as a business.

It’s constantly evolving

This industry is one of the most dynamic in the world, with innovation and technological advances ensuring there’s never a dull moment. The rapid evolution of the industry means you’re always learning and growing, no matter which part of the business you work in.

One of the changes we’ve noticed in recent years is the role technology plays in how we deliver energy services to customers. New innovations such as smart meters and mobile apps mean more freedom and flexibility for our customers, as well as more opportunities for those who work at npower. As technology advances and customers increasingly move to a more digital way of managing their energy consumption, we’re looking forward to developing our service offering to meet this changing appetite. To do this, we need team members working in everything from strategy to programme, delivery and optimisation to improve our customer journey. And the digital evolution is just one of the many exciting developments within npower and the wider industry.

There are many opportunities to progress

When you work in a large industry such as energy retail, you’ll find an abundance of opportunities to upskill and progress. At npower, we offer a variety of ways to develop personally and professionally, including charity work, volunteering, dedicated development programmes and internships, competitions and graduate schemes to help nurture new talent. We love seeing our team members progress through the business and tackle new challenges, and encourage an open, supportive environment where knowledge is shared and success is celebrated.

You can work in different environments

An energy career can see you working in a variety of locations all over the UK, with npower based in around 20 sites across the country. Not all roles are entirely office-based, either. Our smart meter installers, for example, are field-based and work on the road, while our customer service advisors typically work in our call centres across the country. Many of our team members also enjoy agile working, offering a flexible approach to work locations.

You’ll be kept challenged and busy

The fast-paced, constantly evolving nature of the industry means that those who work in it must keep pace with developments and changing consumer patterns. This makes it a thrilling market to work in, as you’re constantly learning and adapting to industry developments and changes in customer behaviour. No matter what area you’re working in, no two days will be the same, which is what makes it so interesting.

At npower, we have a wide variety of roles and we’re always looking for great people to join our team. For more information on the energy jobs we currently have available, click here.
