A graduate's perspective: The Finance Graduate Scheme

02/10 2017Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog

For any fresh graduate, the step from study to full-time work can be daunting, challenging, and at times, frustrating. At npower, we aim to take the stress and difficulty out of the job search process by offering a range of industry-specific graduate courses, tailored to career paths and designed with a future at npower in mind.

One such scheme is our Finance scheme. You can find out more about the Finance graduate scheme online, but for a more personal perspective, we invited two of our current Finance graduates to tell you more about their experiences on the programme. Nick Shrive and Miriam Matenga are two Solihull-based graduates currently working as part of the three-year programme.

Here's what they have to say:

We start the day by playing table football

"An average day could involve interest analysis, credit control or any range of different financial challenges, depending on what rotation you're in the middle of, but I always start my day with table football," says Nick.

"I play with my cohort of fellow grads, who all get along really well, and it’s a brilliant way to start the day."

It's a relatable industry

"After completing an internship at an investment bank, I realised I wanted to work in an industry that was more relatable for me personally. As an energy customer, I can identify with the work I'm doing and the challenges faced by consumers, which makes this industry so appealing to me," says Miriam.

"I chose this graduate scheme due to its strong emphasis on learning and development," Nick explains.

"There's a whole Graduate Development team focused on the graduate intake's development and skillset, with graduate development days designed to help us learn new skills and be successful in our careers."

You gain an industry-recognised qualification

"The three year scheme sees you studying towards the CIMA qualification, which is an industry-recognised accountancy qualification that is hugely important when you work in finance," says Miriam.

"While you do need discipline to study and work at the same time, npower have been really supportive of us in achieving this certification and are flexible with time off as require," Nick adds.

Miriam agrees. "npower really want you to achieve this qualification, and they'll help to make sure you pass your exams."

You can shape your future

"The best thing about this scheme is that it allows you to shape your own future – the different rotations and variety of work you get stuck into means you can try out what type of finance work might suit you," says Miriam. "You have a mentor assigned to help plan your career path, plus additional support from your managers."

The industry moves constantly

"The energy industry is constantly evolving," says Nick.

"This means that as a company, we need to adapt to meet the future needs of our customers and anticipate further change. This makes it a really exciting, dynamic place to work. On top of this, the scheme offers you opportunities that no one else gets – you regularly meet stakeholders and are involved in high-level decisions, plus you have the shared experience of working with fellow graduates."

Do your homework before applying

Miriam advises brushing up on your knowledge during the application process. "Don't be afraid to contact anyone to ask for help during the process, or ask questions about the company," she says. "You can go a long way by showing your enthusiasm for the role."

Nick recommends graduates study the requirements carefully. "Look at the competencies npower require for the scheme and tailor your application to suit. When it comes to the numerical and psychometric tests, brush up beforehand and don't be afraid to try again. I initially struggled with these but did some independent study to get me up to speed, then I found them much easier to pass. And always remember dress smartly, show your npower knowledge and express your enthusiasm for the scheme."
