Are you a good fit for our IT Graduate Scheme?

We have a graduate scheme for just about everyone, from budding engineers and analysts through to future business leaders. And for those who are technologically inclined – or indeed, simply analytical and interested in how things work – we have the perfect programme. Our IT Graduate Scheme is set to springboard graduates to success at our innogy business arm, providing all the technical training required to launch a career in information technology. And while the programme provides professional ITIL qualification and practical tech skills, you don’t have to have studied IT at university to be a success in this scheme. We spoke to innogy’s Enterprise Architects Drew Poller and Chris Sheraton about the kinds of people they’re looking for.

How did the IT Graduate Scheme come about?

The IT programme is a recreation of a scheme we ran in the past, where graduates undertake rotations in different technical and non-tech areas to gain exposure to different parts of the business. This cyclical nature of the scheme means that students who aren’t entirely sure what direction that want to take their career in can try out several different areas. It’s a win-win for students and the business, as it builds up a network of bright, capable IT professionals who have broad experience and tailored training.

“Most people who come out of university don’t know exactly what they want to do,” says Drew. “The opportunity to work for innogy - a large international company - and find out what they enjoy and what works for them is really appealing.”

Who should apply for the IT Graduate Scheme?

While we welcome IT graduates to apply to this programme, we also encourage anyone with a bachelor’s degree in a non-IT analytical subject (such as maths, history and psychology) to apply. Drew also encourages language experts to apply.

“Some of the best people I’ve worked with in IT are language specialists. The reason is that lots of what we do in IT is translating techno speak into English”.

The breadth of training during the scheme means that we can help people upskill their technical proficiency, so we’re looking more broadly for self-starters who are interested in and have an appreciation of technology. Written and aural skills are key, as is the ability to sell ideas to others in the business.

“You don’t need to be a technical coder,” says Chris. “If you’ve got the ability to think about how people are using technology and how this could change into the future, this could be the perfect scheme for you”.

We look for candidates who can process large volumes of data and consolidate it into easy-to-digest snippets. Analytical thinkers and those who utilise blue sky, outside-the-box methodologies can make great IT professionals, regardless of how much technical prowess they possess currently. Just ask Chris, who started his professional career in financial services before finding himself interested in the more creative, solution-driven world of IT.

What makes the scheme so exciting?

As one of the UK’s big six energy companies, npower and its other business arms offer exceptional opportunities for fresh graduates looking to gain real-world experience and make their mark. “The energy industry is changing dramatically and will develop enormously within the next two years,” says Chris. “We want graduates on-board in the IT team now to provide innovative, fresh ideas on how we can move the business forward. Industry-breaking stuff is going on at the moment, so this is a crucial time for tech and people who work in it.”

The scheme gives graduates the necessary training to transition into a permanent role within the company, and with the industry experiencing a real turning point at the moment, it’s the perfect time to get involved. As a large company, there are opportunities for development and progression that don’t tend to arise in smaller organisations, and the international nature of the business means there is potential for overseas travel.
