Celebrating diversity and inclusion in the workplace: LGBT & Friends at npower

27/03 2019Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog

At npower, we care deeply about promoting inclusivity within the workplace and are committed to creating a working environment where everyone is respected and valued. To ensure this is deeply embedded into our core practices at npower, we place an emphasis on continued learning and training based around diversity and inclusion. As part of this, we have introduced an extensive training programme for our employees including those in managerial positions which has brought awareness of the benefits of diversity and reiterated the company’s no-tolerance policy on discrimination.

LGBT & Friends

We have the LGBT & Friends network which is open to everyone in the company and aims to support an inclusive culture, educate to reduce prejudice against those who identify as LGBT, empower LGBT employees and promote awareness of npower as an LGBT and diversity-friendly employer.

LGBT & Friends has held several events to highlight prevalent LGBT+ issues and provide a safe forum for members to share their experiences. We recently supported Diversity Roadshow across our UK offices, and contribute regularly to the wider company’s diversity and inclusion agenda to further our message and outreach.

Employee stories

One of the founders of our LGBT & Friends network, Kiran Evans spoke to Stonewall about their experience of acceptance within npower:

“As someone who openly identifies as gay and gender fluid, I've been shown acceptance and support from my colleagues and the company itself. […] In previous roles, my LGBT identity was suppressed, ignored and overlooked. Now I am encouraged, supported and able to flourish in all aspects of my role, just as the next person would. I've been able to open myself up to all kinds of people with different beliefs and backgrounds without ever worrying if I'll be accepted or not.”

We aim to provide other LGBT members within npower and potential candidates with an accepting and safe working environment that encourages diversity.

What we’ve done

npower has partnered with Stonewall to create lasting change based on our unified vision for a more inclusive future achieved through empowering individuals and transforming institutions.

We believe that through effective collaboration, we can make a real difference to workplace cultures — guaranteeing they are more LGBT inclusive.

2018 has been a progressive year for the world and at npower. Within that time, we:

• Launched eight networks across all sites with 12 committed “Site Champions”
• Were celebrated as a key focus area for diversity and inclusivity by npower’s very own D&I community of practice (CoP)
• Hosted 12 LGBT events to raise awareness and recruited over 250 supporters
• Share compelling stories across internal and external comms channels
• Fundraised for local and national LGBT charities
• Collaborated with Stonewall as part of the Diversity Champions programme
• Gained qualitative data insights on LGBT & Friends employee satisfaction

We’re excited for what’s to come in 2019 and the progress we can make together. You can read more about working culture at npower on our blog.
