Celebrating women in business this International Women’s Day

07/03 2019Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog
Friday 8 March is all about women, all over the world – it’s International Women’s Day, which means it’s time to celebrate some of the most inspirational, daring, creative and high-achieving women in business. From entrepreneurial Estée Lauder to savvy CEO Indra Nooyi and even npower’s very own powerful women, we’re taking a look at those individuals who have helped to shape society as we know it.

Dame Anita Roddick

Dame Anita Roddick was a beloved British businesswoman and environmental campaigner, most widely known as the founder of ethical beauty product company The Body Shop. As one of the first organisations to prohibit the use of ingredients tested on animals, Roddick paved the way for more ethical, environmentally-friendly companies and brands to achieve commercial success. Heavily involved in charity work and believing that businesses should offer some form of moral leadership, she was committed to doing good as well as achieving success in her business.

Indra Nooyi

Consistently ranked among the world’s 100 most powerful women, Indra Nooyi began her career in India before joining PepsiCo in 1994. By 2001 she was named CEO, directing the company’s global strategy for more than a decade. She was responsible for the reclassification of PepsiCo’s products and moving the brand toward more healthy alternatives. In 2001, she saw PepsiCo’s net profits rise from US$2.7 billion to US$6.5 billion, with an 80% raise in company sales during her 12-year tenure as CEO.

Estée Lauder

Cosmetics pioneer Estee Lauder is known as a visionary businesswoman, who is quoted as saying “I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” She started her legendary skincare and beauty business with just four products and plenty of ambition. Introducing the ‘high touch’ service, Lauder believed that a successful beauty brand needed to touch the customer and explain products, something that is now commonplace throughout the beauty world. She was a savvy marketer, creative entrepreneur and tenacious businesswoman who created what is one of the most recognisable beauty brands in the world today.

Women at npower

We’re proud of the amazing women who make up npower’s diverse, driven team. We even have our own internal women’s network, Moxie, created by women for women. Now a year old, Moxie was launched by a small group of graduates and now boasts nearly 300 members, run by 17 women across the wider npower business but also has 62 men in its network (representing 22% of the group). With an aim to inspire, empower and connect women in business, Moxie hosts networking events, shares relevant information and gets involved in events to support gender equality, such as producing more gender-inclusive job adverts, participating in the Diversity and Inclusion Community of Practice and supporting our mental health first aiders to promote mental well health.

Moxie Chair Helen Tipton says Moxie is a brilliant network that can be used to really make a difference.

“I wanted to be part of Moxie because I love the way that it is already an active and inclusive network that can make a difference and use a collective energy to help those involved to be courageous and contribute more. I am really keen that the network is supportive by problem solving and helping people overcome challenges. I also like the educational aspect that can offer different perspectives so that women within their careers can contribute to our full abilities. Finally, I wanted to be involved to help npower continue to embrace the diversity agenda as it makes great business sense.”
