Look to the future with npower’s Graduate Development Programme

To ensure you have the top talent in your organisation, you need to nurture your team members from their very first steps. We know our graduates can go on to great things in our company, and it’s our job to help them get there. That’s where our Graduate Development Programme comes in.

Our Graduate Schemes cover five disciplines - Business Leadership, IT, Engineering, Finance and Quantitative Risk - and produce team members who go on to become leaders of npower into the future. Our recruitment process is in-depth to ensure we get the right people for our business, so it’s only natural that we develop these candidates to become the best they can be.

During a typical two-year Graduate programme there are eight face-to-face development modules. These days not only support the learning graduates do throughout their placements, but also help to fill in gaps and extend their knowledge in particular areas. Graduates can expect development days to include everything from business updates from the CEO through to innovation workshops and presentation projects, with activities aimed to enhance their skillsets while allowing them to showcase their talent and potential to other areas of the business. We have internal and external expertise at our development days to share with graduates vital business skills such as networking, self-awareness and presentations. It’s this level of support and encouragement that we believe inspires our graduates to go on and do brilliant things within the business.

Graduate development starts with our summer LaunchPad event, where successful candidates meet others who have been accepted into their graduate intake. The LaunchPad session also sees current graduates and our graduate support team come together to prepare future teams for this next step. Our engineering graduates undertake a separate programme run by RWE’s training centre at Ferrybridge, while other graduates can expect to meet their fellow cohort across the different schemes.

Our Grad Book is another way we assist new graduates as they move through the programme. This handy guide was written by graduates for graduates, sharing a treasure trove of knowledge handed down over the years to give new grads the best start possible. This is particularly valuable during the first few months of the graduate placement. We also provide online training via bite-sized modules that help guide graduates through everyday conversations and situations they will encounter in their new roles.

Feedback is important for us as a business, and we know our graduates feel the same. We host regular feedback sessions alongside formal development centres after the first and second year of every graduate programme. Our development experts provide plenty of guidance to grads, ensuring they have every opportunity to broaden their skills and experiences within the company. Plus, we always have previous graduates ready to help provide additional support and encouragement - after all, they’ve been there before.
