npower win Best Corporate Graduate Site award at 2018 Onrecs

The 2018 Onrecs brought together some of the nation’s best businesses, celebrating success, growth, innovation, talent and achievements within the online recruitment industry. Here at npower, we attended after being nominated for the Best Corporate Graduate Site Award 2018 – a prestigious honour we are delighted to say we won.

A new approach to graduate recruitment

Last year saw a strategic change in the way npower recruited graduates. We wanted to look at retaining graduates beyond the two-year training period, and also to increase the numbers of graduates recruited in order to develop more talented individuals within the organisation.

To do this, we aligned our graduate programmes more closely with our core business areas. We increased the number of schemes from five to eight, with the number of graduates placed rising from 16 in 2016/2017 to circa 45 in our latest intake.

The results

Our 2017 graduate campaign resulted in close to 5,000 applications, of which more than 2,000 went through to the assessment process. Not only that, but all programmes received strong numbers of applications and achieved – or surpassed – target quality application numbers. Compared to 2016, the redesigned graduate career site received more than 25% more unique visitors.

What made it work

The energy sector isn’t always perceived as the most exciting industry for graduates. Because of this, our attraction strategy was designed to give graduates a true insight into the fantastic opportunities within npower, and what it’s really like to work within the business. As part of this, we developed content around the green energy part of the business, as this is a key part of npower’s future. Content developed by the team was created to excite and motivate people to find out more and apply.

Feedback we received from applicants suggested that the growing interest in being part of a renewable and green revolution in the energy sector was part of the reason for applying. Our emphasis on the ‘real stories’ behind graduates and the programmes also showed a human side to the business, as applicants could watch videos and read more about people who have been through the programmes, discovering what they’re really like.

Social media played a key role in our attraction strategy. In addition to generating content that was relevant, tailored and accessible to graduates, we used our social channels to target content directly to graduates and those in their networks. Facebook advertising strategies generated significant traffic for us, and allowed us to answer queries directly from interested parties in an informal setting. A mix of video, blog and graphic content was used by our team to target different audiences at different times.

The entire team at npower is thrilled to receive the award, as it highlights our ongoing work in the graduates’ sector and desire to improve every year.

“This year has been a phenomenal success and the graduate career website and support provided by 4MAT in developing this and the content has played a key part in attracting such a high number of quality graduate application. We are delighted to receive this award in recognition of this” – Michelle McDonald, Graduate Recruitment Manager

Well done to all involved in achieving this great award. Here’s to another great year of graduates at npower.
