When sales and Electric Vehicle Charging combine: Your next career move

28/06 2018Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog

The rise of electric vehicles is one of the most exciting things to happen to the energy industry in years. With predictions that battery-powered cars will account for 9% of the world’s electricity demand by 2050, the electric car market is hotter than ever. And this growing interest brings with it a whole world of new job opportunities, which is where our Electric Vehicle Charging team comes in.

What does the Electrical Vehicle Charging team do?

Introduced eight months ago and experiencing rapid growth since, the EV Charging team was formed in order to develop a proposition for the UK market. The team has grown significantly since then, with seven members currently on board, and we’re now looking for brilliant people to help us build a pipeline for the sale of EV charging hardware and software services. With products and services continuously evolving, now is the perfect time to get involved.

What is the role of Business Development Managers within EV Charging?

Part of what makes the EV Charging team so successful is its Business Development Managers, who introduce npower’s EV services to existing and potential customers alike. This role is crucial for helping to identify which EV charging hardware and services are the best for the business and its customers, as well as providing and selling a proposal. More than a pure sales role, Business Development Managers do everything from advising customers who have immediate operation needs for charging units to those who have a strategic requirement for bulk orders in the long term, as well as working with the wider team to manage site surveys and developing our approach to market.

Why be a Business Development Manager?

For those working in sales, this is an ideal opportunity to not only get involved in a new and exciting market, but also help to propel the business forward into the future. As the team is so young and our business is currently undergoing a significant period of change, the EV Charging team has a real role to play in shaping products and offerings. The market is new and we’re testing and learning every day, which makes this role – and team – ideal for people who want to be challenged and encouraged to develop with the company. Business Development Managers are field-based, with a main location of Solihull, and an agile work culture is encouraged. If you want more than just a sales role, and to work in one of the most exciting industries around, this could be your chance.

Take it from one of our current Business Development Managers, Geoff Blythe, who says the role is varied and exciting. Working within the close-knit, supportive EV Charging team, he loves partnering with customers on all things energy and says the scope for development within both the team and the business is significant.

What are the key skills and attributes of Business Development Managers?

Based on Geoff’s experience within the role, he says the types of people who thrive are those who have a natural curiosity for customers, their businesses and the electric vehicle market.

“You need to have genuine enthusiasm for meeting people in all types of organisations, big and small. We identify customer requirements and suggest solutions that both meet their needs and work to npower’s advantage as a business. You also need to be as motivated and enthusiastic for the last new business meeting of the week as the first – even if you have driven 600 miles in the meantime!” he says.

Business Development Managers also need to have a degree of technical aptitude – and ideally some electrical vehicle or energy industry experience - as well as patience, positive and flexibility. New business takes time and the sales process in EV charging can be protracted, so perseverance is key. Of course, strong business development experience is crucial, particularly around building relationships and consultative sales.
